The initial world reaction to China's cataclysmic upheavals of 1989 was disbelief. However, telecommunications made it possible for the world to see that the tragedy was real - thousands were mercilessly slaughtered and a fascist purge was mounted against the pro-democracy leaders.

The Chinese people now recognize that the Communists are no different than their past tyrants. Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution and Deng Xiaoping's tragic repression were not aberrations but manifestations of China's basic problems of governance and leadership. Questions arise as to the nature of a culture and society which breeds such rulers and maintains a people which has seldom enjoyed stability and prosperity. Intellectuals in China have become concerned with ways to make their country strong and stable ever since China's defeat in the Opium Wars as the Chinese nation gradually falls behind in the global race for development. One of the most important themes in their debates has been what to learn from the West, and what to retain from the traditional Chinese culture.

This book examines the Chinese and their culture and takes as a central theme the stepping stone syndrome, a social-psychological complex which is uniquely characteristic of the Chinese people. Scheduled for return from British to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 as a Special Administrative Region (SAR), Hong Kong is viewed as a geopolitical and psychological stepping stone.

This work begins the process of identifying and understanding those behaviourial characteristics that can help to predict the Chinese.
