Oscar Korschelt was a German engineer who went to Japan at the invitation of the Japanese Government in the early part of the Meiji era (1867-1911). He remained there for twenty years, becoming an expert at the game of Go under the tutelage of the country's leading player. His treatise on the game was first published at the end of the nineteenth century, but fell into obscurity until editors Samuel King and George Leckie rescued it, translated it from the German, and added numerous illustrative diagrams. The result is a systematic analysis of the game, famous plays, problems, and theories of practice - an indispensable handbook for the novice as well as the experienced player.
