To itself and the rest of the country Auckland has always been something of an enigma. Whether they love it or loathe it, however, no New Zealander is entirely indifferent to their country's largest city. For nearly two generations it has acted as a kind of urban magnet, luring its population from other cities and towns, from the countryside of north and south and from the islands of the Pacific.

From an aerial view James Siers has captured the flavour, beauty and energy of the Auckland region and in the text and historical images Hamish Keith offers a very personal account of the natural and human forces that shaped the isthmus. No small task for a region that sprawls across an area that would hold Greater London three times and still have room for New York and Paris.

Sadly, for most of its history, too few writers or poets have sung Auckland's praises. Only a handful of books have attempted to tell its story. Above Auckland is a kind of visual inventory. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the power and beauty of the city and its environment and, perhaps, a stimulus to preserve and enhance a truly marvellous place.
